What Is Opal
A Gem of Rainbow Light — Play-of-Colour
Opal is a natural stone of silica and water. Countless microscopic silica spheres line up in an orderly array and scatter light, giving rise to the rainbow flashes known as "play-of-colour." SMUK chose the Ethiopian opal as its centrepiece — a stone formed over long ages within earth shaped by volcanic activity.
Shifting colour with the angle of light, it seems to hold a small sea and its light within. Each stone wears a different face — no two are ever alike.
History & Legend
A Gem Loved as the "Stone of Luck"
The ancient Romans called opal "opalus" (precious stone) and revered it as the most valuable of gems, one holding the colours of all others. Cherished as a symbol of hope and innocence, it was also known as "Cupid's stone," after the goddess of love.
In medieval Europe it was passed down as a lucky charm and a mystical stone said to hold hidden powers. Across the centuries, its fantastical glow has never ceased to enchant.
