Where SMUK began — and where we're headed.
The meaning of our name, and how it began
SMUK began in 2014, when we first made handmade macramé accessories with natural stones. That was the spark for everything. In time, searching for pieces that could be treasured for longer, we expanded into jewellery made from materials born of nature — silver and gold.
Then, in July 2023, SMUK was formally incorporated in Tokyo. True to its name — "beautiful" in Danish — the brand begins with a commitment not only to the beauty of the wearer, but to protecting the beauty of the earth as a whole.
Two founders
SMUK is nurtured by two people of different countries and backgrounds, each bringing their own perspective and experience.
RIOU
From TaiwanBorn in Taiwan and moved to Australia at a young age to study art and industrial design. Now based in Tokyo, leading SMUK's operations, product planning and design.
KHOON
From SingaporeFrom Singapore. After graduating from the University of London, worked in brand management across several countries. Now leads SMUK's overseas development.
Nature, beauty, value
What SMUK holds dear is nature, beauty and value — giving form to these three as carefully as we can. From choosing materials to design, packaging, the moment it reaches you, and how it feels after years of wear, we look at every stage through the lens of real, everyday life.
The beauty of the jewellery itself, of course — but also the effort to create less waste and the ease of everyday use. This is the direction we've walked, unchanged, since the day we began.

A responsibility to the earth and its life
SMUK takes its responsibility to the environment seriously, with a particular focus on protecting marine life and natural ecosystems.
- Sustainable materials All of our materials are recyclable and sourced and made in sustainable ways.
- Eco-conscious packaging The materials used for products, packaging and shipping are recyclable too, keeping the burden on the environment to a minimum.
- Minimising our footprint At every stage of production and distribution, we make choices mindful of the environmental impact.
Beyond this, we hope to lend our support, little by little, to the protection of wildlife and ecosystems — and to service and guide dogs that quietly support people's lives. Once the brand is on steady ground, we aim to contribute more actively.
