What is Kyanite?
A stone whose very name means blue
Kyanite is an aluminum silicate mineral whose name comes from "kyanos," the Greek word for blue. True to its name, its greatest charm is a clear blue reminiscent of sapphire. Within a single stone, gradations of light and deep blue appear, shifting with the angle of the light.
SMUK's kyanite is unheated. Rather than adjusting the color with heat, we deliver the stone's own natural blue as it is. As with all natural stones, each one differs — the depth and tone of the blue is unique to every piece.
From Nepal, Land of the Himalayas
A blue raised in high mountains
Kyanite is mined mainly in Nepal, Brazil, India and Tanzania. Among these, Nepalese kyanite — from the land of the Himalayas — is known for its especially clear, beautiful blue.
For this collection, SMUK chose unheated kyanite from Nepal, keeping the work to a minimum so its deep, clear blue reaches you just as it is.
Meaning & Symbolism
A stone of independence and purity
Kyanite's traditional keywords are "independence," "adaptability" and "purity." From its calm, deep blue, it has long been cherished as a stone symbolizing quiet resolve and a heart that stays true to its own center.
A Stone Whose Hardness Changes by Direction
Kyanite has a character rarely seen in other stones: its hardness varies with the direction of the crystal. Soft along one axis, hard along another. This property earns it the name "disthene" (two strengths), and its Mohs hardness ranges roughly from 4 to 7.5 depending on direction.
This same quality makes it difficult to cut, so a well-finished kyanite shows the maker's careful hand. In daily wear, avoiding hard knocks and treating it gently will let you enjoy its blue for a long time.
