What is Opal?
A gem that holds rainbow light
Opal is a natural stone made of silica and water. Tiny silica spheres arrange in an orderly lattice that scatters light, creating the rainbow shimmer known as "play-of-color." For its lead, SMUK chose natural Ethiopian opal, born of volcanic earth — kept as it is, with no dye and no heat.

Its color-shifting glow is like a small sea and light held inside the stone. Each one differs, and no two are ever the same. Its Mohs hardness is 5.5–6.5, and because it contains water it is a delicate stone — treated gently, it will keep its shimmer for a long time.
History & Legend
A gem loved as a "stone of good fortune"
The ancient Romans called opal "opalus" (precious stone) and revered it as the most valuable of all — a stone that held the colors of every gem. Treasured as a symbol of hope and purity, it was also known, after the goddess of love, as "Cupid's stone."
In medieval Europe it was passed down as a good-luck talisman and a stone said to hold mysterious power. Across the ages, its dreamlike shimmer has continued to captivate.
Meaning & Symbolism
A stone symbolizing creativity and hope
Opal has long been seen as a stone of "creativity," "hope" and "inner light." The way it shows different colors from different angles seems to reflect each person's many sides and sensitivity — quietly accompanying those who embrace change and move forward with fresh inspiration.

Birthstone & Zodiac
Opal is known worldwide as October's birthstone. It is also considered a guardian stone for Libra and Scorpio, resonating with the energy of harmony and transformation — a favorite gift for those born in October.
