How-to Guide

One-Touch Earring Gone Loose?
Here's Why — and How to Fix It at Home

That satisfying click that no longer clicks.
A common experience with well-loved earrings.
We explain the cause and walk you through a simple adjustment method for silver 925 pieces.

Why Do One-Touch Earrings Loosen?

One-touch (hinged) earrings work by pressing the pin tip into a small notch or groove to create a secure closure. Each time you open and close the earring, that repetitive motion causes the metal to gradually fatigue — and over time, the pin angle drops slightly, making it harder to catch the notch properly.

This is a natural characteristic of metal, not a sign of poor quality. For earrings worn daily, it can happen anywhere from a few months to a couple of years into regular use.

Silver 925 is a relatively soft metal —
which means a gentle adjustment
is often all it takes to restore the click.

Surgical stainless steel and titanium are significantly harder, making them difficult to reshape once deformed. Silver 925 (sterling silver), with its natural softness and flexibility, can often be coaxed back into shape with just your fingertips — no tools required.

Note

This guide applies specifically to one-touch earrings made from silver 925. Results may vary depending on the construction and degree of wear. If you are unsure about your earring's material, please contact your retailer before attempting any adjustment.

Three Steps to Restore the Click

No tools needed — just your fingers. Follow these three steps and, in most cases, you'll have your earring closing securely again.

I Check — Inspect the pin angle

Open the earring slowly and look at the direction of the pin. In its ideal state, the pin should angle slightly upward, toward the notch it's meant to catch. If the pin is sitting nearly horizontal or angling slightly downward, that's the likely cause of the loose closure.

If the pin feels wobbly or appears cracked, do not attempt to adjust it — take it to a professional jeweller instead.

II Adjust — Gently raise the pin angle

Using the pads of your thumb and index finger, apply very light upward pressure near the base of the pin — just enough to nudge it slightly higher. Think of it as a micro-adjustment, not a bend.

Work in small increments: adjust a tiny amount, then test the closure. Repeat as needed. Silver 925 is sensitive to repeated bending, so restraint is key — a little goes a long way.

III Confirm — Test for the click

After each adjustment, close the earring slowly. A clear, small click means success.

Once closed, give it a gentle tug to confirm it holds. If it still feels loose, return to step II and nudge the angle a fraction more. Patience here matters more than force.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

Warning — Never force the adjustment

Applying too much pressure can cause the pin to become unstable, or in the worst case, snap at the base. Silver 925 is workable, but repeated or excessive bending weakens the metal at the stress point. Always use the lightest touch possible, and stop if you feel any resistance beyond a gentle give.

Tip — When adjustment isn't enough

If several careful attempts don't restore the click, the metal may have fatigued beyond what gentle reshaping can fix. In this case, we recommend consulting a professional jewellery repair service. Continuing to force the adjustment risks breaking the pin entirely. For earrings purchased from SMUK, please feel free to get in touch with us directly.

  • Work in a well-lit space on a stable surface so you can see clearly
  • Use the pads of your fingers rather than fingertips or nails for better control
  • After adjustment, monitor the closure for a few days of normal wear
  • Checking your earrings periodically helps you catch any loosening while it's still easy to correct
