The Time a Plated Jewel Carries
The Truth About Jewellery
In these illustrations, we drew "jewellery when new" alongside "jewellery two years later."
No matter how lovingly you care for it, plated jewellery changes with time. The surface may wear, the finish may soften — but that isn't a flaw. It's a quiet record of the time and feeling that person has carried with it. A natural character that only comes with wear.
Wear it as yourself.
Let it change alongside you.
At SMUK, we use silver 925 as the base for all our pieces — so that beauty can be enjoyed for as long as possible. We drew these illustrations with one wish in mind: that you wear your jewellery the way you are, and let it become part of your story.
On Plating — and What Lies Beneath
Plating is a surface treatment — a thin layer of gold, rhodium, or another metal applied to the exterior of a piece. It creates the initial brilliance and finish you see when a piece is new. But through daily wear, contact with sweat and oils, and the natural passage of time, that surface slowly changes.
What matters most is what sits beneath. Jewellery built on a base of brass or inexpensive alloy can expose more irritating metals to the skin once the plating wears down. The base is the part that stays.
- Every SMUK piece uses silver 925 as its base material
- Even as the plating wears, what touches your skin remains 92.5% silver
- Our allergy-conscious approach begins at the base, not just the surface
- In many cases, light tarnishing or dulling can be restored with a polishing cloth
"Lasting" and "safe to wear" are, for us, inseparable values. The surface finish may change with time — but the integrity of the material beneath it does not. That's the kind of jewellery we want to keep making.
