A Brilliance to Rival Diamond — Moissanite

Lab-grown · Brilliance · GRA Certified · Collection

Moissanite necklace sterling silver 925 rhodium plated GRA certified SMUK

A brilliance that rivals a diamond — and, by some measures, surpasses it. Moissanite is a new generation of gemstone, grown in the laboratory. From what it really is, to how it differs from diamond, to the GRA report that comes with every stone — here is our guide, alongside the SMUK moissanite collection.

What Is Moissanite?

About the Stone

Found in a meteorite, grown in the lab

Moissanite is a gemstone made primarily of silicon carbide. It takes its name from the French chemist Henri Moissan, who discovered its crystals in a meteorite crater in 1893. Natural moissanite is exceedingly rare — found only in tiny amounts in meteorites and the like — so virtually all moissanite sold as jewellery today is lab-grown.

Being lab-grown does not mean lesser quality. Grown in a controlled environment, moissanite achieves high clarity and a consistent brilliance. It carries far less of the environmental impact of mining, and comes at a more accessible price — a sustainable, honest choice for a new era.

How It Differs from Diamond

Moissanite & Diamond

Brilliance, hardness and price — each its own

Moissanite is known for a “fire” (dispersion) that is stronger than a diamond’s, scattering light into rainbow flashes. Its refractive index is high, too, so it sparkles all the more vividly in the light. It is also very hard — 9.25 on the Mohs scale (diamond is 10) — with plenty of durability for everyday wear.

Hardness Moissanite 9.25 / Diamond 10 (Mohs)

Fire Higher dispersion — stronger rainbow brilliance

Origin Lab-grown — low impact and ethical

Price Accessible, even at the same visible size

Strong fire High clarity Hardness 9.25 Ethical Accessible price

About the GRA Report

GRA Certificate

A unique number, for every single stone

Every SMUK moissanite comes with a GRA report (GRA Moissanite Report). GRA is a third-party body that grades moissanite, issuing a report of the cut, colour and clarity grades along with a unique warranty number. The number can be registered and verified online — proof that your stone is genuine.

A report is included with stones of 1 carat and above. Both SMUK moissanite necklaces are around 1.0ct, so each ships with its GRA report — a reassuring choice, including as a gift for someone special.
