Is It Okay to Wear Jewellery 24/7?
Hygiene, Care & What We Recommend

Wearing jewellery all the time isn't necessarily wrong — but keeping it clean makes a meaningful difference. Here's what we've learned, and why we always recommend a little regular care.

A Question We're Often Asked

One of the most common questions we receive from customers is: "Is it okay to wear my jewellery all the time?" And honestly, wearing jewellery around the clock isn't automatically harmful. We understand the appeal — it's convenient, and depending on the material, pieces can generally withstand extended wear without major issues.

But what we always say is this: even if leaving it on is fine in principle, taking it off periodically and cleaning it properly will serve both the jewellery and your skin much better in the long run. Good care isn't about inconvenience — it's what makes a piece last.

Your jewellery touches your skin every day.
Keeping it clean is the simplest way
to protect both your skin and the piece itself.

Dirt Builds Up — Every Single Day

Think of it this way: your hair gets dirty and you wash it. In the same way that sebum, dust, and sweat accumulate on hair and skin, jewellery picks up the same residues every time you wear it.

Even when washing your hair, the earrings and necklaces you're wearing are exposed to sebum and shampoo residue. Over time, this accumulation can create unpleasant odours and an environment where bacteria can thrive.

What Happens If You Don't Clean It

Leaving residue to build up over time is a common cause of skin discomfort — and notably, this can happen regardless of how good the material is. It's the dirt itself, not the metal, that becomes the irritant.

  • Inflammation, itching, or redness around piercing holes or skin contact points
  • Unpleasant odour from bacterial growth
  • Increased risk of eczema or contact dermatitis
  • Possible trigger for developing metal allergy sensitivity over time

Cleanliness Is for You — and for Those Around You

The smell that builds up on unwashed jewellery is often the last thing you notice yourself. Others may sense it long before you do. Keeping your jewellery clean is a small act of consideration — for your own comfort, and for those around you.

None of this requires much effort. A small, consistent habit makes a significant difference to both hygiene and the longevity of your pieces.

SMUK's Honest Stance

Every time a customer asks whether they can wear their jewellery all the time, our answer comes from the same place. We understand the desire to keep it on — but in good conscience, our recommendation is always to remove it periodically and clean it, so both the jewellery and your skin stay in the best possible condition.

As a brand that sells jewellery, it would be easy to simply say "it's fine." But we believe our responsibility is to give honest, accurate information — including about hygiene risks that go beyond material quality. That's the standard we hold ourselves to.

How to Care for Your Jewellery

Nothing here is complicated. Small, consistent habits protect your investment and keep your skin comfortable for years to come.

I Daily Care — Everyday habits
  1. After removing your jewellery, gently wipe away sebum and sweat with a soft cloth
  2. Remove pieces before bathing, swimming, or exercise where possible
II Weekly Cleaning — Once or twice a week
  1. Wash gently in lukewarm water with a small amount of mild, neutral soap
  2. Use a soft toothbrush to clean into crevices and settings
  3. Rinse thoroughly, then pat dry and allow to air dry completely
III By Material — Things to keep in mind
  • Silver 925: Tarnish can be easily restored with a polishing cloth — no professional cleaning needed
  • Plated pieces: Avoid rubbing too hard, as excessive friction can wear away the coating over time
  • Pieces with gemstones or natural stones: Some stones are sensitive to water or soap — professional cleaning is recommended
Note

Tarnishing (darkening) of silver 925 is an oxidation process — it is not the same as an allergic reaction, and it is not harmful to skin. A gentle polish with a silver cloth restores the shine easily. Understanding the difference between tarnish and contamination helps remove unnecessary worry.

Jewellery Is Not a Disposable Item

Good jewellery is made to be worn for years — even decades. The pieces you chose with care deserve to be treated with care in return. A small amount of maintenance makes a real difference to both how long they last and how beautiful they remain.

Even the finest materials accumulate daily grime. Building a simple care habit is the most effective thing you can do to keep your jewellery looking its best for as long as possible.

Wearing your jewellery continuously is, of course, entirely your choice. We only want to make sure you have the full picture — including the hygiene side of things — so you can make the most informed decision. A little regular care goes a long way toward making every piece more enjoyable, more beautiful, and longer-lasting.
