What Is Ametrine

About the Stone

Two colors in a single crystal

Ametrine is a bicolor quartz in which amethyst (purple) and citrine (yellow) coexist within one crystal. Though it is a single quartz, slight differences in temperature and in the state of iron as the crystal grows cause purple and yellow to appear divided within the same stone.

The conditions for these two colors to form naturally are very limited, and natural, unheated ametrine is a rare stone seldom seen on the market. Its hardness is 7 on the Mohs scale. While much of the material sold today is artificially produced, natural bicolor stones differ in how the colors divide from one piece to the next — no two are ever exactly alike.

The Name & the Anahí Mine

History & Legend

A Bolivian stone that carries a princess's name

The name "Ametrine" combines Amethyst and Citrine. Its main source is the Anahí mine in Bolivia, South America.

A story from around the 17th century has been passed down. A Spanish explorer is said to have married Anahí, a princess of an indigenous people, and received the mine as her dowry. Later, by presenting ametrine to his queen back home, the stone became known in Europe. The mine's name, "Anahí," is still spoken of alongside the stone today.

Meaning & Symbolism

Meaning & Symbolism

Opposing colors, brought into harmony

Ametrine's stone meanings are "harmony" and "stability." From the way two entirely different colors — purple and yellow — melt together within one crystal, it is said to symbolize balance, calm, and the joining of two things.

As a stone that holds the meanings of both amethyst and citrine, it has been cherished as a special piece — one that plays two roles at once.

Two Birthstones

Ametrine holds two birthstones — amethyst (February) and citrine (November). A rare stone that suits those born in either month, it is also chosen for anniversaries shared by two people, or as a gift for someone who cherishes both months.

The SMUK Ametrine Collection

A collection pairing natural, unheated ametrine with a base of Italian sterling silver 925 finished with rhodium plating. This time, we took on our first large-stone design. Every stone is over 1.5ct, and the largest — the heart cut — is 6.7ct. Large cuts are rarely used for rare ametrine, but we chose them intentionally so you can fully enjoy the gradation of purple and yellow.
