Earring backs are the small components that secure a piercing post behind the earlobe — and the material they're made from directly affects comfort, security, and how they look from behind. We offer three options: sterling silver 925, sterling silver 925 with 14K gold plating, and silicone. Each has its own strengths, and the right choice depends on how and where you wear your earrings.

At SMUK, we use four types of plating finishes, each selected to suit the design and materials of the piece.
Rhodium Plating — A rare platinum-group metal. Tarnish and scratch resistant, with a bright, clear silver tone. Gentle on sensitive skin.
18K Gold Plating — 75% fine gold over sterling silver. Warm, deep gold color that flatters all skin tones.
14K White Gold Plating — 58.3% fine gold with a soft, cool white tone. Pairs beautifully with pearls and delicate designs.
Gold Vermeil — Sterling silver (925) base with a gold layer 2.5+ microns thick. More durable than standard plating with a longer-lasting shine.
