【Little Travel】Indonesia Batik Journey - Exploring the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage

Batik is Indonesia’s traditional wax-resist dyeing technique. Wax is applied to the fabric to draw intricate patterns, and dyes are layered on top to create complex and beautiful designs. The areas covered with wax resist the dye, resulting in unique combinations of colors and fine, detailed lines.

The patterns and colors of Batik vary by region, each carrying its own meaning and story. Historically, Batik was used for royal garments, but today it is widely worn in everyday life and for ceremonial occasions throughout Indonesia. In 2009, Batik was recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, highlighting its cultural significance on a global scale.

Through this trip, I was able to see the artisans' craftsmanship and the entire process up close, which deepened my appreciation for the depth and beauty of Batik.
