【The background of Illustration】
Oyama Jinja Shrine, established in 1873, is dedicated to the first lord of the Kaga Domain, Maeda Toshiie. The front gate was built in 1875 and blends together Japanese, Chinese, and western styles of architecture.
It was the first shrine gate to feature such a design.
The gate’s first story comprises three broad arches, the skeletons of which were built entirely of wood using Japanese architectural techniques.The outer stone facade is made of tomuro-stone, a type of stone characteristic to construction in the Kaga Domain.
The third story features glass panels in five colors on all four sides. Historically, the third story interior could be lit, turning the gate into a lighthouse.
